The Secret to My Success!

This verse truly is the secret to my success! I have peace, I don't stay stressed, I have the best sleep of my life.

"I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you.

You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.

I will be found by you,” declares the LORD, “and will bring you back from captivity and restore your fortunes." (—Jeremiah 29:11-14)

Practically speaking, can you find a life & business coach better than the Creator of all things? We're all inspired by a leader that pushes us ahead, and believes we can do the tasks given to us. God is that leader, and he already knows our plans and wants us to prosper. Seriously, my only hope is in Him, and things are good!

For me, the first challenge was to surrender the things I loved & feared the most (my business and finances). To allow God to be in complete control of my plans and to believe that He wants me to prosper.

Secondly, I have to pray about all decisions and plans. After all, once you truly surrender, they aren't yours anymore. He asks that we seek Him with all our heart and He will listen. Which means we are to pray in the good times as well as the bad, and trust he's actually listening. To be in His presence and to be known by Him is so comforting, and is the best feeling ever!

Finally, I have to make sure my motives are aligned with His and be willing to walk away when they are not. His promise is not to harm us or hold us captive, but to set us free and live with freedom. Faith is something that requires practice, so I encourage you to start somewhere, surrender, and seek. Don't expect everything to be easy, but do trust that the Lord knows your plans. Try walking in faith and see where it leads you!

My second trip to Haiti was amazing! It was so good to see old friends and meet new ones. God revealed to me so many things about encouragement. I will write more about it soon, but I can say it was definitely cool to be able to encourage the workers and nannies at Maison orphanage to try new ideas and develop rubble-wear with them!
If you haven't figured it out by now, rubble-wear is a symbol of how the Lord can turn beauty from ashes. Good Fortune caught the vision and so did the Haitians. "Our formulations are biodegradable and phosphate free, so they're good for the earth and the rivers, if you were to take our stuff camping," Jack said. "We also recycle all our shipping boxes. It's not necessarily the most pretty package going out, but it's recycled."

* Why do it this way? "We try to keep it simple," Jack said. One product she makes, the Three In One All Purpose Soap can be used to shave, wash hair and face, reducing the number of products you need to buy and packaging that could be wasted by buying separate products for those tasks.

* Advice for others considering green initiatives: "Seek out ways that you can be greener by taking it one step at a time," she said. "Set achievable goals. One month it might be to start a recycling program, the next month to change out the light bulbs, then the next month to change vendors that match your business philosophy. Over time, those little changes will make a big difference."

* Is environmentalism an essential part of the business and why? Environmentalism is at the core of Good Fortune. In-house, there is a recycling program where anything that can be recycled is taken to the recycle center weekly, and household items are repurposed to be used during the manufacturing process. "We actually cut the top off an old jug and use it as a funnel," Jack said. "We are constantly trying to reuse things around the house instead of spending a lot of money or buying things."

I opened my tiny mailbox one day and was pleasantly surprised by the wonderful smell coming from a package from Good Fortune. I recognized the smell of mint and lime right away as it filled my vestibule. I opened the package in my apartment and let it sit in my bedroom for a few days because I liked the combination scent of eucalyptus, mint, and lime so much. The scent filled the room like a burning candle, without thedanger!

When I finally had time, I drew myself a nice hot bath and sprinkled the mineral salts in the water shortly before I got in. The scent was so relaxing and wonderful and I could feel the salts just melting under me. I never usually stay in the bath very long, but I added an extra handful of the salts just because it was so lovely! When I got out there was no smelly residue or heavy scent left on me from the salts (I hate that!). The scent lingered on just long enough for me to finish enjoying and didn't rub off on my clothes or overpower my regular perfume.

I would recommend these salts to anyone! I really, really loved the scent. I have used a eucalyptus and mint bubble bath before from a chain store but I much prefer this product and scent. The added lime gives it such a burst of freshness. Does this come in a candle? I would definitely buy that! (It sure does! Look here.)

Thank you so much for letting me test your product! I do have a few suggestions...The directions we pretty small and hard to find, though I assume most people know how to use bath salts. And the packaging, though lovely, was a little hard to use. I would probably pour them into a jar just to make it a little easier to pour into the tub. (We took her advice, check out our new packaging!)

I would definitely use the cute organza bag it came in again, to package a small gift or a gift card, so I appreciate that the packaging is reusable. I also really appreciate small businesses and try to support them as much as possible. And giving handmade, or local items, to me is much more personal. It means you didn't just do some quick one stop shopping at a mall, you actually took the time to pick something out with a certain person in mind.

Ways we strive to be efficient:
• 100% percent post-consumer paper for printed materials, whenever possible
• Recyclable and/or biodegradable plastics, paper, aluminum and corrugated cardboard for packaging
• Recycle shipping boxes and use recycled paper as the cushioning material in all our outgoing shipments

Q. Are your products all-natural?
Yes and no. As with any product, reading labels is important. Yes, because our products contain mostly plant derived materials. No, because we use colorants and fragrances that are considered in-organic material, and are not directly from the earth. Our goal is to use the highest quality skin nourishing ingredients, fragrances, and herbs that have been approved for use on skin. We never use harsh detergents, synthetic preservatives, phosphates or parabens.

Q. Why handcrafted natural soap is better?
We use real oils and real ingredients. Take time to read a soap label at the drugstore.... Notice the ingredients you can’t pronounce, mineral oils, harsh preservatives, and artificial colors. How can you get your skin clean with ingredients like that? Instead, Good Fortune uses natural plant-based ingredients that nourish and cleanse without drying or irritating, and still prove effective against germs and dirt, but gently!

The ingredients in Good Fortune products come from the world God gave us, not a test tube: 100% vegetable oils and essential oils, clays, honey, shea butter, and natural exfoliants such as oatmeal and lentils. The higher price of these ingredients is a small price to pay when it comes to the quality we provide.

We carefully select botanicals and nutrients to nourish the skin without harsh ingredients. Our advice is to learn the main chemicals to avoid, and then check the product ingredient label.

Here are a few we don’t like:

Animal Tallow (not a chemical, but we prefer to use vegetable bases)

Petroleum products – you know, mineral oil, the overuse of fossil fuels? Not cool. Go check your drugstore lip balm, lip gloss, and baby oil—GF uses beeswax instead! Mineral oil prevents the skin from breathing, and it blocks the absorption of the good stuff from soaking in.

Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS): Sodium Lauryl Sulfate is considered to be an irritant to the skin, especially when used frequently, and is commonly used to provide lather in shampoos, soaps and bubble bath.

Fragrance oils and dyes: Fragrance oils and dyes are synthetic and can cause sensitivities in some individuals. Commercial products are often loaded cheap synthetic fragrances and colors. GF offers high quality fragrance oils in order to give our scent-obsessed customers that ‘apple’ scent you can only get from an fragrance oil. We use our FO’s sparingly and add the lowest percentage to recipes to help avoid any skin irritation.

I used the massage oil as skin moisturizer every other day. I had put some of the oil on my legs after a shower, and my Jack Russell Terrier, Buster, came up a few minutes later and started licking my calves! He's such a character. I think he has likes the orange scent because we have an orange tree in the backyard. He enjoys playing with the small ones and thinks the tree grows "toys" just for him.

I first heard about Good Fortune from my friend Steph ... and I'm so glad I did!

They recently sent me some Faucet Soap to try out - wow! I tried the Citronella & Grapefruit scent. It's very refreshing and reminiscent of summer. I feel like I should be camping! But since I don't camp ;) it works well in my shower. The packaging is very cool - it's packaged inside a net bag, which makes the soap exfoliate and easy to use. Plus I hang it on the string after using, which makes it easy to dry. It also came in a waterproof bag to make traveling easy.

I'm the one you want at outdoor functions since the mosquitoes love me! I'll definitely use the Citronella soap next time I'm outside to keep the bugs away.

I'm really impressed with the Good Fortune branding. Their creative and professional brand comes through in both their products and website. That's not it though - they are a green company that also offers products that give back to the community.

I've been so impressed with the faucet soap, I can't wait to check out more Good Fortune products. So many great scents - I think the coconut mineral soak sounds wonderful. It's refreshing (pun intended!) to use products I believe in!

Unfortunately there aren't any local stores that sell Good Fortune (yet!) … I would love to see it at one of Seattle's trendy boutiques, or a larger chain like Metropolitan Market or Whole Foods. You recently sent me the Applejack Soap with Spirit for review. It fills my mind with images of fall: warm apple cider, pumpkin pies, and burning leaves. In general, ALL your soaps that I've used thus far have left my skin feeling sooo soft. I rarely use lotion after showering, and have stopped using shaving cream. I started using your products because a close friend highly recommended them. I, personally, was really impressed with your website: your mission, beliefs, and what you represent as a whole. I'll continue to use your products for those same reasons.

I currently use just your soaps, daily, as does my husband. I've had to wrestle him for the Sweet Spice when one of us goes out of town. He's in the landscape business, yet still LOVES how he smells at work around contractors! He grades your soaps on how well the scent carries on throughout the day, not just in the shower. We've used Sweet Spice, Sandalwood Lavender, Pink Grapefruit, Sweet Island Coconut , and now Applejack. Sweet Spice is by far our favorite. We've both gotten compliments in public on how good we smell: him at work, and both of us at outdoor events.

Your packaging is lovely, but I generally will order the bulk, naked bars. Its more cost-effective for me. However, I'll definitely invest in the packaged soaps for gifts. I try to do environmentally-friendly gifts for all my friends. Your products will be a real treat for my girlfriends and family.

Green Tea Room Spray by Good Fortune Soap Company

I opened it up and was very slightly apprehensive because "IT'S GREEN!" It smells wonderful. It comes very nicely packaged. I must say, I'm a sucker for a cute label or a bottle that looks nice with my home decor. But man it smells good, did I say that already?

So, I did what any red blooded woman would do, I ripped it out of the package and sprayed everything in my house (much to husband's dismay, he liked it very much, but I perhaps went to excess...). So now the guest room, the linen closet, our closet, our bed and pillows.... you get the picture... smell DIVINE.

And then I got to thinking, I bet I could make a little sachet out of this bottle of Heaven to put in my delicates drawer to make my pretty underthings smell perfectly wonderful as well. So thats just what I did.

I stamped some organic cotton fabric.

Then I stitched it on and stitched the sachet together, leaving a small opening for the brown rice I'd scented earlier with the spray and let dry overnight.

It smells lovely and it was so simple! I used Staz-On Ink and set it with the iron, stitched it together and voila!

As an added bonus, I love that Good Fortune Soap gives back to the community, and is made with all natural ingredients. So I don't have to worry that I'm putting more chemicals into my everyday use household items. I must say, I wish she sold in gallon sizes... because its very possible I'd purchase :)

Want to enjoy one of the best parts of Fall all season long? Take a few minutes, throw together a pot of Apple Butter, can or freeze it, and you can have a yummy Fall treat whenever you want! And I know from experience it's a fantastic gift!

5 1/2 pounds apples - peeled, cored and finely chopped
4 cups sugar
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
1/4 teaspoon salt

Place apples in a slow cooker. Combine sugar, cinnamon, cloves and salt; pour over apples and mix well. Cover and cook on high for 1 hour. Reduce heat to low; cover and cook for 9-11 hours or until thickened and dark brown, stirring occasionally (stir more frequently as it thickens to prevent sticking). Uncover and cook on low 1 hour longer. If desired, stir with a wire whisk until smooth. Spoon into freezer containers, leaving 1/2-in. headspace. Cover and refrigerate or freeze.

Get in the tub and rub the honey mixture over your body, recline and cover yourself with the hot towels. Sit, relax, and enjoy until the towels are cool and you are ready to rinse. Rinse, pat yourself dry, and follow up with some plain coconut oil or your favorite all-natural lotion.

I first discovered Good Fortune Soaps when looking for a Mother's Day present for my boyfriend's mom. I regularly read Southern Living Magazine and when an article recommending Good Fortune was featured, I trusted that I would be nothing less than thrilled with the products I would order. I often purchase home-made soaps from a small shop in Tarpon Springs that makes goat milk soaps because they seem to last much longer and treat my skin much better. Occasionally I'll pick up a brand-name from the store, but there's always something missing - not so with Jennifer's soaps from Good Fortune.

First, the value of her soaps is truly amazing. You think to yourself "wow, I'm paying $4, $5, or even $6 for soap," but when you receive the products and see how long they last, and most importantly how refreshed you feel after using them, you realize it is MORE than worth it! Your skin feels smooth and soft without over drying. When used for shaving, I find I have no irritation and no itchy feeling when I'm finished. There's also no oily residue left on your skin - there's a clean finish and a pleasant uplifting scent.

And that's another important reason I love Good Fortune Soaps - although all of the scents are amazing, they're not overpowering by any means. I don't find myself coughing or sneezing after taking a whiff of the soaps and my boyfriend doesn't back away because it's too strong. He made the comment that when I use [Good Fortune Soaps] soap, I smell like me and not an overpowering perfume. My favorite scents would have to be the sweet island coconut and pink grapefruit. I'm looking forward to trying some of her products with the peppermint, vanilla, and orange notes.

Good Fortune does an excellent job with packaging and shipping. They don't send you a huge box with lots of packaging; they attempt to reduce packaging (and environmental impact) as much as possible. This is also true for the soap wrappers. The wax papers come with quotes that make you think and make you smile. The outside of my soap read: "The funny thing about life; if you refuse to accept anything but the best, you very often get it." -Somerset Maugham. Such a true thought and very much along the lines of her theme: Fortune favours the bold.

Overall, I think Good Fortune Soaps are a great value and a great product! I only wish more stores in my area sold the products so I wouldn't always have to watch my mailbox for my next goodies.

Inspiration From the Great Salt Lake

I just back from the OR trade show in Salt Lake City, Utah where I found a beautiful treasure and a fun adventure! I recently learned that the Great Salt Lake is actually the remainder of prehistoric Lake Bonneville, is pretty shallow, has no fish, and is more salty than the ocean.

My inspiration has always come from nature. I love creating art and products based on my life! I felt a sweet tingling from the salt on my legs and an exfoliation from the natural salt beneath my feet. Hope in Haiti: An Interview with Filder

I recently visited Port Au Prince Haiti to teach soap making to the caretakers at For His Glory Orphanage, and was blessed by the beautiful people I met. Yes, Haiti is filled with tragic stories, but it is also filled with hope.

Check out this amazing story!! On Monday morning our special missions teams were gearing up to start counseling and soap sessions, but needed a translator. Amazingly, Filder was praying for work and God told him to go directly to the orphanage (a place he'd visited once a long time ago). I kid you not....Filder got dressed, walked to the orphanage, and knocked on the door the moment we realized we needed a translator. I still can't figure it out? Talk about God's perfect timing!

Watch my interview with Filder, and hear how he lost his parents, job, and home due to the earthquake, but still stands strong on God's promises. I hope you are encouraged by my friend's boldness for the Lord and his spirit to keep on going.

Life in Haiti-Day 1

Haiti isn't that far away globally, but the 2 day trip seemed very long! We had and overnight stay in Fort Lauderdale and then landed in Port Au Prince at 8 am. Getting our baggage and pressing through customs was a big ordeal. Thank God for experienced team leaders and security staff because needy people are everywhere! The streets are littered with rubble and people. It is a completely different world over here. Everyone is really nice, and I'm glad I'm here.

Once we dropped our luggage off at the orphanage, we went to the store and bought a few groceries. Our group stocked up on soda and snacks for a party we'll be throwing later this week. We are eating simple meals such as peanut butter and jelly and a few local treats such as soda and wheat toast. Yum!
Here is our tent where the girls sleep at night and where we make soap and have counseling sessions during the day. The wonderful nannies threw some mattresses and sheets on the floor, and it was off to sleep for me. Thank God for those ear plugs I bought at the airport-I slept like a queen!
Traveling around downtown Haiti was a surreal experience. On Sunday afternoon our driver & security man drove us down the tiny streets lined with rubble. Our group was just here in May said the progress already looked much better, but the devastation was is so wide spread. This one photograph is where the house once stood of two of the sisters now at For His Glory Orphanage. The house fell on the parents while the kids were outside. The 1 and 3 year survived for an entire week outside before they were found. Don't ask me how infants survived outside for a week, but they did, and I praise the Lord for the opportunities to share there story. Their spirits are beautiful!
All the kids and nannies are awesome! It is so sweet to give hugs, but sadly there aren't enough! As soon as you pick up one toddler, then there is another one standing there with their hands up. I had one in each hand and three on each leg earlier and thought they were trying to take me down. The kids are exhausting, but I'm having such a good time playing and loving on them. I need to go rest now, because the heat is exhausting.

Soap making classes start tonight, and the word is everyone is excited. Yeah! I can't wait to share those stories and photos later. Thanks for your prayers...I feel them!
